While the Corporation offers a variety of programs and services, its early childhood initiatives have been most heralded. In 1993, the Corporation’s Future of America Learning Center was established. The Learning Center, which focuses on early childhood education and development, provides a high-quality education program for the offspring of working families, setting a standard of achievement and excellence for children and parents.
Nearly 20 years after its establishment, the Future of America Learning Center continues to be an invaluable tool for parents, community members, and youth. Unfortunately, not all parents in the community can afford to send their children to early childhood enrichment programs. With your support, we can help give more children who live in the community the head start that they deserve.
Experience has taught us that by providing a critical head start today, we can ensure a brighter tomorrow. Studies show that those who receive a quality early childhood education are much more successful than their peers who do not. The effects of a solid foundation and a healthy head start yield measurable long-term results.
Parents struggling to give their children a head start, which is particularly important in communities where a child’s future can be predicted before it even unfolds, are often at a crossroads. Educational programs which promote leadership and encourage potential are desperately needed. By helping parents in the community, we help children to develop strong academic skills and place them on the path to becoming active, productive members of society.
Saturday, November 12th (9:30am – 4:30pm)

The Anne Shore Camp Program allows eligible children between the ages of 9 and 15 to attend three- to four-week summer sleep-away camps located across the Northeast. One child per family may attend, although an exception may be made for twins. Camps for teenagers and children with disabilities or special needs are also available.
Camp offerings include a range of recreational and creative activities, including team and skill-building exercises. More than 800 1199SEIU children attend sleep-away camp annually.
The Joseph Tauber Scholarship Program allows children of eligible 1199SEIU members who attend accredited undergraduate programs to be considered for need-based financial awards. Award amounts vary according to need, with a minimum annual award of $750. Awards can be used for tuition, loan debt reduction, book purchase, expenses, or transportation.
One of the advantages of the Joseph Tauber Scholarship Program is that it is not a one-time award. While award renewals are not automatic, previous scholarship recipients who reapply for an award can be considered for support the following academic year. The Study Incentive Program offers current award recipients another option for scholarship support. The award was established to encourage academic achievement and to reward academic excellence. The Program is available for current awardees who maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher per semester.
The Labor Management Initiative’s Youth Mentoring Program (YMP) is administered by the Child Care Corporation. The Program offers a vocational experience to youth by placing them in the institutions where their parents work and exposing them to various career paths.
The six-week summer mentorship experience introduces high school teens to careers in the health profession. By working closely with supervisors, coordinators, and other interns in hospitals and nursing homes, youth are able to develop support networks and acquire insight that enables them to prepare for the future.
The Future of America Learning Center provides a stimulating, educational environment to promote the academic growth and development of children and to offer them a strong foundation for the future. The Learning Center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and its accrediting body, the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. The Center offers a unique program model that emphasizes self-directed learning, which guides children to learn through observation, exploration, and experience. The Future of America Learning Center prepares students to become active learners, ever-inquisitive individuals whose potential and self-esteem are fueled by their active participation in the learning process.
Among the Learning Center’s principles are the following: 1) provision of a multi-faceted, stimulating, learning experience in accordance with children’s social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs and development, 2) cultivation of self-expression, creativity and self-esteem, 3) support of partnership efforts with parents in the education process, and 4) maintenance of a strong commitment to the staff’s continuing education and professionalism.
WorkForce 2000 is a yearlong academic program which meets on Saturday at New York University during the academic year. The WorkForce 2000 summer experience is mandatory for all students and includes a four-week academic session or a four-week work internship for students meeting program criteria. The program is designed to help teenagers succeed in high school, prepare for college and explore career interests. The school year component of WorkForce 2000 consists of education, college preparation, life/leadership skills, social/cultural development and community building. WorkForce 2000 also offers a weekend retreat, workshops, and leadership experiences throughout the year.
Students interested in nursing may apply to the WorkForce 2000 Pre-RN track. This program component introduces students to the fundamental elements of nursing and allows them to explore potential pathways to a nursing career. The Pre-RN track is designed to help students complete the high school coursework they need in order to pursue a career in nursing and provides them with unique, practical opportunities through fieldwork and experiences to gain insight into the expanding career options for nursing.
The 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Corporation seeks grants and other contributions to ensure critical educational opportunities for children and youth. Your assistance will enable the Corporation to continue its mission of providing a stellar educational and nurturing environment to the children of our members and to the surrounding community. Funding is critical to the Corporation’s longevity, to its ability to maintain its current student enrollment and program offerings, and to meet the needs of struggling families. By making available high quality educational programs such as the Future of America Learning Center, which provides care for infants, toddlers and young children, and WorkForce 2000, which prepares high school students for college admission and career development, the Corporation is able to enrich the growth and development of children exponentially.
The Corporation hosts an annual fund raiser to help support its ongoing advocacy, education and professional development programs for the children and families it serves. The gala also takes the opportunity to recognize those individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to education, corporate responsibility and New York City’s children and youth. Past honorees include Geoffrey Canada, president and chief executive officer of Harlem Children’s Zone, Danny Glover, actor and UNICEF Ambassador, Linda Dunham, Global Chair of Ronald MacDonald House Charities, and Dr. Philip Ozuah, Physician-in-Chief of the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center. The critical funds that are raised as a result of this event help sustain the Child Care Corporation’s commitment to providing an affordable educational environment grounded in excellence, which allows children and youth to thrive during all stages of their development.
