  • WorkForce 2000

WorkForce 2000 is designed to help 1199SEIU youth succeed in high school, prepare for college and explore career interests. The program, a collaboration between the Child Care Corporation and New York University, offers a dynamic opportunity for youth leadership and development. It consists of a summer weekday academic experience or work internship, a fall retreat, and Saturday academic sessions at New York University during the school year.

Through volunteer efforts, cultural awareness and social activism, WorkForce 2000 students are at the forefront of creating positive change in their communities. The Child Care Corporation’s goal is to ensure that youth take the crucial steps toward creating successful high school experiences and making dreams of college and future careers a reality.

WF2 students are motivated by sheer discipline. Despite their growing high school workloads and extracurricular school activities, students participate in full-day Saturday academic sessions and in other WF2 programming throughout the entire school year, as well as for four weeks during the summer.

    Pre-RN Program

On Thursday, May 31, the 2018 graduates of the 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Fund’s (CCF) Pre-RN program were honored for their achievements at the annual Lab Coat Ceremony. The Pre-RN program is part of CCF’s WorkForce 2000 initiative, a year-round academic program designed to help children of 1199SEIU members succeed in high school, prepare for college and explore career interests. The Pre-RN program of WorkForce 2000 aims to increase both the availability and diversity of the New York City nursing workforce by helping prepare high school students to pursue nursing professions.

At this year’s ceremony, Eizan Wallace, a 2010 graduate of the Pre-RN program, described the resiliency of nurses in delivering comprehensive patient care and navigating professional challenges. Norma Amsterdam, Executive Vice President of the 1199SEIU Registered Nurses Division, reminded the graduates to serve with compassion, communicate clearly and always advocate for their patients. • Youth Mentoring Program

The Youth Mentoring Program (YMP) is an innovative project of the 1199SEIU League Labor Management Initiatives, Inc., and is administered by the 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Corporation (CCC). The program was established over 25 years ago to assist the Union and employers in building a future workforce by exposing eligible members’ high school age children to ever-expanding careers within the healthcare professions.

Each summer, the CCC partners with 18 hospitals and nursing homes to introduce teens to the world of work and careers in the healthcare field. The YMP provides several key opportunities for its participants, including: hands-on work experiences; enrichment seminars; and career development and leadership skill-building opportunities. In addition to gaining valuable work experience, at the end of the six-week program, participants emerge with a greater understanding of the healthcare industry, a more robust professional portfolio and connections with caring mentors.

Want to participate as a host institution? Call (212) 564-2220 today to learn about how you can partner with us and support the YMP’s efforts to engage our youth in a healthcare-focused mentoring experience.

    About the Program

The Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program offers 9- to 15-year-old children a wide range of summer sleep-away camps throughout the Northeast. The 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Corporation administers the program, enabling parents to select the best camp experience for their child. Diverse offerings include camps that emphasize athletics, fine arts, technology and outdoor adventure, as well as traditional camp experiences that provide a wide variety of activities. All participating camps are independently owned and operated and are accredited by the American Camp Association. Camps for children with special needs are also available.

Find out more about the process of applying for the Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program and attending camp.

Sleep-away camp can be an intimidating transition for both parents and children. For many families, it’s the first time children are away from home. Camp gives children the opportunity to enhance their physical, intellectual, emotional and social skills. In turn, these skills help promote independence and self-confidence. The Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program provides informational resources for parents, such as a Guide to Handling Homesickness, to aid in the transition.

Additionally, Anne Shore’s Camp Fair, hosted each fall, and Online Parent Seminar, hosted each winter, educate families about the various camp program options. At the Camp Fair and Online Parent Seminar, parents can have their questions answered directly by representatives from the camp providers or the American Camp Association, as well as Anne Shore Program staff. These events allow families to gain a better understanding of the unique summer experience that camp offers.
